Temporary Leave of Absence
A student may request a Temporary Leave of Absence (TLOA) for one or more of the following reasons:
- Medical treatment for a physical or mental health condition
- Recovery from a medical procedure
- Bereavement
- Personal or family emergency
Please note that leave requests related to parenting or pregnancy follow the Pregnancy, Parenting, and Lactation, Policy found in the Student Handbook.
A Temporary Leave of Absence grants the student an excuse from attending classes and submitting assignments for a determined period. While this policy excuses a student from class attendance, the student remains responsible for all material covered in class and must work with each individual professor upon return to complete any required work. While the College seeks to support students navigating unexpected disruptions to their studies, one or two weeks away from the classroom can negatively impact students' ability to succeed in the class. When possible, students should schedule medical procedures between semesters or consider a semester-long Leave of Absence if needed.
Leave related to a medical issue may be granted for up to two weeks. Bereavement leave is typically granted for up to one week for an immediate family member and up to three days for a death outside of the immediate family.
The request form for an Temporary Leave of Absence is available on the Dean of Students – Student Support website. When possible, the requesting student will meet in-person or remotely with the Dean of Students or the Student Outreach Coordinator. Each request will be reviewed on an individualized basis and may require appropriate documentation to support the request. Students may also email the Dean of Students (mcdos@maryvillecollege.edu) or MC Cares (mccares@maryvillecollege.edu) with any questions or to learn more about this process.
Requests are granted or denied by the Dean of Students and communicated to the Assistant Dean of the College. Exceptions to this policy may be made by the Dean of Students.
When feasible, students should seek approval of the emergency temporary leave of absence prior to the start of the absence. However, the College is aware that extenuating circumstances may exist in emergency situations where such prior approval is not feasible. In rare circumstances when the student is unable to submit the request, a College official can initiate the process using the form referenced above.
