Auditing a Course
Students who want to attend courses without earning academic credit or a grade may do so by auditing a course, subject to the regulations outlined below. Auditing a course allows students to engage with course content for personal enrichment, professional development, or to review and reinforce foundational knowledge in a specific discipline prior to further academic or professional pursuits.
Students auditing a course are expected to attend class regularly and abide by the instructor's general classroom policies. Auditors are generally not required to complete assignments, take examinations, or participate in graded activities. However, specific expectations regarding participation (such as readings and class discussion) are at the discretion of the instructor and should be discussed and agreed upon at the time of permission. Prerequisites for courses still apply to auditors, though they may be waived by the instructor's discretion for audit purposes only.
Degree-Seeking Students
Full-time students are permitted to audit one course each semester without additional charge. Adding a course as an audit or changing enrollment from credit to audit must take place before the end of the Drop/ Add period. Audited courses do not yield academic credit and will not count towards any degree requirements, but they do appear on the official transcript if attendance is satisfactory.
To audit a course, full-time, degree-seeking students must:
- Obtain explicit permission from the course instructor. Discuss any expectations the instructor may have regarding attendance, participation, and completion of assignments
- Complete the Schedule Adjustment form, noting in “Credit Hours” the abbreviation AU, to indicate that the student will audit. Obtain signatures from the instructor for the course and the academic advisor
- Submit the Schedule Adjustment form to the Registrar’s Office
Students should note that credit by examination cannot be earned for courses that have been taken as an audit at Maryville College.
Non-Degree Seeking Students
Non-Degree Seeking Students are permitted to audit up to 8 credit hours each semester. In order to audit courses, non-degree seeking students must be accepted as a Non-Degree Seeking student using the process described on the college’s Admissions website. Courses taken for audit are not considered for federal, state, or institutional financial aid purposes. Students auditing courses are not eligible for financial aid for those courses.
