Academic Warning, Probation, and Suspension

It is the responsibility of individual students to maintain good academic standing and to make timely progress toward a degree. The Committee on Academic Standing monitors students’ academic progress using the categories described below.

Academic Standing Definitions

Good Academic Standing

A student is in good academic standing if they maintain:

• A cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher, and
• A semester GPA of 2.0 or higher

Academic Warning

A student is placed on Academic Warning if their semester GPA falls below 2.0, but their cumulative GPA remains at or above 2.0.

This status serves as an early alert that the student is not making normal progress toward a degree. Academic Warning status does not affect enrollment but requires a meeting with the academic advisor and use of academic support services.

Academic Warning in the Major

A student is placed on Academic Warning in the Major if their GPA in their major courses falls below 2.0.

Students who receive an Academic Warning in the Major must meet with their academic advisor and create a plan to address the major GPA, which may include changing majors, retaking major courses with low grades, and/ or utilizing academic support services.

Students who remain on Academic Warning in the Major for two consecutive semesters will be removed from their declared major. Upon dismissal, students must meet with the Academic Advising Center to create an alternate academic plan, which may include changing their major or retaking courses in the desired major. A member of the Advising Center staff will be assigned as the student’s advisor until the student returns to the previous major or declares a new major.

Students dismissed from their declared major under this policy may apply for readmission to the major after at least one semester in good academic standing using the Major Readmission Application, available on the Registrar’s website. Completed applications must be submitted to the Division Chair and will be evaluated based on the student’s academic progress, performance and grades in major-specific courses, and the viability of the student’s proposed timeline for graduation.

Academic Probation

A student is placed on Academic Probation if:

• Their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0, or
• They remain on Academic Warning for two consecutive semesters without improvement

Probation is a signal to the student that they are not making timely progress toward the degree, and they are in danger of being suspended. Students on probation must meet with their academic advisor and work with an academic coach to create an academic recovery plan.

Academic Suspension

A student is suspended if:

• They remain on Academic Probation for two consecutive semesters without improvement,

or
• Their cumulative GPA fails to meet the following thresholds:

Credit Hours Attempted   Minimum GPA
 0 – 30  1.60
 31 – 60  1.70
 61 – 90  1.92
 91 and above  2.00

Suspensions require the student to leave the College for at least one academic semester (Fall or Spring).

* Special Rule for First-Year Students and New Transfer Students

· End of First Semester: First-year students and first-semester transfer students will not be suspended at the end of their first semester at Maryville College unless their semester GPA is 0.0. Instead, they are placed in an academic recovery program, which includes a Portfolio course, for their second semester.
· End of First Full Year: If a first-year student's cumulative GPA is not at least 1.60 at the end of their first full year (typically two semesters), they will be suspended. If a first-year transfer student’s cumulative GPA does not meet the suspension threshold at the end of their first full year (typically two semesters), they will be suspended.
